Ulansuhai Nur behind on wetland restoration
The People’s Daily reports that efforts to clean up the Yellow River’s largest freshwater lake and wetland area are behind schedule. Ulansuhai Nur in Inner Mongolia acts as a natural water filter and is critical to ensuring northern China’s water quality. A 2016 plan to clean up the wetland invested eight billion yuan in 96 projects. However, the government of the autonomous region has only completed 10 of the projects, far short of a goal to finish 41 by 2017. The local government has found that a 6,000-hectare aquaculture project has been a major source of pollution.
